Nathaniel Ogden ENG 210 Classical Hollywood Style: Analysis 2 Classical Hollywood style was established roughly a century ago. Even with its age, it has still set the standard for traditional filmmaking. Even recent films still follow the classical Hollywood style. Some prompts within this style of filmmaking include active viewing, verisimilitude, character arcs, visual and sound, subject matter, and themes. Ridley Scott’s The Martian (2015) is a great example of classical Hollywood style still in use. To watch films thoroughly, one needs to participate in “active viewing,” which is consciously examining the film to explore the relationships between their creative content and their meaning. One scene I found interesting is when Mark Watney, the main character, performs self surgery. His breathing and the visuals in the scene is enough to make the audience feel the pain and agony he was going through. Relating to this, I noticed that the film does not take place in the distant future, but rather close to our own time, based on the technology used. He used practical surgical tools, such as surgical scissors to cut the suit and his skin open, retractors to hold it open while he removed the debris, and surgical staples to close the wound. The filmmakers also showed a lot of blood coming out, which further demonstrates the seriousness of the situation. The audience does not see automatic surgical technology like in futuristic science fiction films. It puts everyone in a hard position to watch as Mark goes through that procedure. This scene was also shot with close ups. This brings viewers even closer to the action and aware of Mark’s predicament. Another scene I found interesting with active viewing is with Mark’s rover. The rover looks as if it is lifesize for what NASA may actually send to Mars if humans were to travel there. When Mark is in it, the space looks small and tight, like how a real rover may actually be. I also like that whenever he is in the rover he was shot at different angles. Most of them were low, so it made the audience feel like he was talking to his camera for his vlogs. Overall, active viewing is a very common practice in film study, so the audience can understand how things are made and why there were made the way they were. Classical Hollywood narrative style primarily uses the notion of verisimilitude; which refer to the illusion of immediacy and authenticity in cinema. One scene in particular is the reveal of the Martian landscape. This is done much more impressively than any other adaptation involving Martian landscape. I know how to make soil more martian like from science classes.
