Blaut: Chapter 2 Key Terms: European miracle The idea that civilization came from Europe and diffused to other places Modernization Theory that the diffusion of European ideas, things, and influence would bring about the economic development of the non-western world in coming of Age Development Biological/classical/scientific racism Biological racism - the idea that Europeans had superior heredity and so were born with greater abilities than those displayed by non-Europeans Classical racism - belief that different human races have different endowments and these different endowments are matters of biological inheritance Scientific racism - proof of differences among races → led to racist beliefs, racism based off of bias pseudoscience loosely based off of Mendelian genetics - provided a new way of justifying something that Europeans nearly universally believed Malthusianism
