OL-342: INDIVIDUAL PERCEPTIONS 2 Individual Perceptions As stated, perception is “the way in which we as individuals see and interpret the environment around us and others’ behavior in it – has an impact on and guides the kind of decisions we make about our own subsequent actions” (Organizational Behaviour, 2013). Perception can be easily skewed when is concerns conflict management. Leadership should not be quick to judge a book by its cover (so to say) in observing behavior when approaching types of conflict management. Understanding individual and shared perceptions would be fundamental in good leadership to see how it may or may not influence other individuals and departments. Conflict typically arises from disagreements in an organization and can happen at an individual, group, team, or at a departmental level. Conflict can be short-term or long-term (Organizational Behaviour, 2013). As a leader, it would key for me to not judge a book by its cover. Each person sees issues differently and has different viewpoints on issues. When conflict arises, it would be important to understand each person’s individual perception on the issue at hand.
