THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY2There’s Something About Mary: A Qualitative Leadership Analysis of Mary Rae Toole CainLeadership comes in all different forms and the debate has and probably will always beare leaders born or made? In many instances it is both; however, if you are in the presence of aleader who was born to be a leader it is apparent that they were born that way and not made.According to Northouse there are as many definitions of leadership as there are people who havetried to define it (2019). Leadership means something differently to everyone and each personsees leaders in a different light. It was interested to see how the discussions have evolved sincethe early 1900s of leadership and to end up where we have some very specifically definedmethods of leadership. In the 1920s it was about control and dominance, the 1930s was behavior,1950s behavior and influence in a group setting, 1960s discussed it as the behavior thatinfluenced, 1970s initiating and maintaining groups to accomplish goals, 1980s getting thefollower to do what the leader wanted, and the 1990s to present it became more of a process thana definition and it gave a name to these processes (Northouse, 2019). These approaches toleadership were Authentic leadership, Spiritual leadership, Servant leadership, Adaptiveleadership, Fellowship leadership, and Discursive leadership. Not everyone is a leader and notevery manager is a leader; however, a leader is who we personally see to be a leader or whom wechoose to follow.This qualitative leadership analysis is going to take a look and explore the qualities of alady named Mary Rae Toole Cain. While she may not be the next executive of a largecorporation or even work for a corporation her passion and leadership qualities make hernoteworthy in my book. To determine Mary’s leadership style an interview was conducted togather information that would give the research a rounded view of who Mary is and she was alsoasked to complete a leadership style questionnaire to ultimately determine her leadership style

To start the interview off Mary was asked do define leadership and she respondedwith “I feel leadership is being able to help people achieve their goals” [Cai181]. This was quitea resemblance to Greenleaf’s approach to servant-leadership that says “a servant-leader focusesprimarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong”[Gre16]. Servant-leader or stewardship is the type of leader that is seen in Mary every day. Whilequestioning was a huge part of this analysis, it also was taken from the perspective of beingimmersed in her world and working onMary Cain is the founder and owner of Body Evolution Hot Box Barbell Club and Gym.
