Velazquez 1 Jerdan Velazquez Mr. Ferrians English 101 October 29, 2018 Shaping Gen Z Jean M. Twenge’s “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?”, illustrates the social downfall of a generation and the impact it has on their well-being. Around 2012, the majority of teens began a trend unlike any other generation of teens before: to live life through smartphones. Instead of physical interaction with friends, kids are more likely to be at home and socialize via social media. Not only do kids fail to engage in traditional socialization, they also are less motivated to be independent, along with other freedoms associated with adulthood. Unlike previous generations, this generation of teens is less likely to go out on dates, less likely to have tasted alcohol, and less likely to receive their driver’s licence before they graduate high school. Teens who don’t go out or party have more down time that is mainly focused on their obsession with smartphones. These kids spend three or more hours on their phones are sleep deprived because they are likely to get two fewer hours than the recommended amount of sleep. Oftentimes, phones are the last thing kids see at night and the first thing they see in the morning. Lack of socialization and obsessive smartphone usage is playing a huge role in Gen Z’s psychological well-being, so much that depression and suicide are dramatically increasing.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
