Jerdan Velazquez Per. 1 5/22/18 Mr. Ellwood Health Benefits of Apples Growing up everyone heard “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away”, and no one quite knew the severity of the old proverb. However recent studies have shown that apples can reduce the risk of disease and illnesses that haunt many U.S citizens such as: cancer, neurodegenerative disorders(alzheimer’s and dementia), and strokes. This is due to the high levels of Flavonoids and Dietary fibers in the sweet juicy fruit we all know and love. Flavonoids, a type of antioxidants are “compounds found in food that stop or delay damage to cells” Says nurse Patricia Howe of Central Washington Hospital. Flavonoids are broken down into 6 sub-flavonoids called polyphenols in which are the most recurring and most beneficial, found in apples: Quercetin, Myricetin, Kaempferol, Epicatechin, Chlorogenic acid, and Procyanidin B2. Each of these polyphenols serve a different purpose in the apple and are responsible for various health benefits. Quercetin reduces inflammation, mainly in the cardiovascular system which in turn improves your immunity. Quercetin is known as “Nature's Benadryl”, which turns off histamine production and moderates inflammation that occurs when one has an allergic reaction.

Quercetin has also been known to slow the growth of certain cancer cells. Myricetin, jam packed with anti-cancer properties specifically against colon, pancreatic and skin cancer. It also inhibits cholesterol oxidation, a high risk for both strokes and heart attacks. Kaempferol and Chlorogenic acid are powerful
