Kristy Cowfer Mr. Stephen Fonash English 004, Section 3 December 15, 2007 "History In The Making" Did you ever wonder about the history of your school? Questions like when was it founded, what classes were offered, what sports and activities there were, and who are some of the people who graduated from it? Well before I visited the Hintz Family Alumni Center I had had many unanswered questions. However, now I can say I know all the answers. Penn State was founded in 1855 and was originally know as the farmer’s plant college. It got this nickname because it was literally “planted” in the center of the commonwealth of State College and mainly farmers attend. It started out as an all man’s college and eventually offered its first two women’s courses in 1884. Women were still eligible for admission into other classes, but these two were designed especially for them. Over the years Penn State has grown dramatically since those days when it first started. However in many aspects it is still the same. Back then the campus distributed
