Therapeutic Use Bacteriostatic action against susceptible bacteria. Prophylactic against opthalmia neonatorum and prophylactic treatment of gonorrhea and chlamydia infection. Complications Eye edema and irritation of the eyelids (chemical conjunctivitis) and temporary blurred vision for 24-48 hours. Medication Administration Apply a one to two centimeter ribbon of ointment to the lower conjunctival sac of each eye, apply from inter to outer campus and use a single dose unit. Contraindications/Precautions Hypersensitivity Nursing Interventions Interactions Administer within one hour after birth. Prevent applicator from touching the eye. Dab away excess but do not wash away medication.
