In order to make aviation fuel Germans had to turn coal into a liquid fuel. The price of petroleum continues to go up Where is the Largest Gold Producing Mine in the World? o Cajamarca, Peru. Huge demand for gold in India o How do we mine/make it today? Go to Peru and measure the gold concentrations in rocks Chemical Leaking 99% of the total rock- crush the rock and put it in the pile that we pour solutions on. Add chemicals to the water to make a solution that reacts with the gold. Gold comes out of the bottom. What is in the solution? Cyanide does not react with copper o To get copper you have to use sulfuric acid Most efficient way . Gold mining- cyanide solutions, Gold, Silver, Mercury complexation comes out of the bottom. Clean up from environmental Impacts Caused by Gold Mining Mercury is looked at as a waste material Where is the mercury coming from in the U.S. today? o Comes from coal burning. Ends up in the atmosphere and re-deposited into the environment. Coal burning #1 contributor to mercury in the air. o How is mercury dangerous to people? Very dangerous to pregnant women and children Not all types are toxic Mercury vapor is toxic o By-product mercury from Perus largest gold producer was being transported to market and 150 kg of metallic mercury accidentally spilled over 41 Km of highway in Rural Peru Spill occurred when there was no rain for 6 months.. a good thing because then it didnt get into the water system.
