Raechel Estes Adrian AP English 12 03/09/19 In the novel Johnny Got His Gun , Trumbo uses the literary devices, symbolism and allegory, within Joe’s flashbacks beginning in The Dead, and his conscious experiences in The Living , to answer the question is Joe dead? Symbolism is a literary device that contains several layers of meaning. Often concealed at first, it represents several other aspects, concepts or traits than those that are visible in the literal translation. An allegory is a metaphor that uses a character, place or event to deliver a broader message about real-world issues and occurrences. The question, not being literal as in Joe is not breathing dead, but is he dead to the world; will communication with morse code make a difference in the eyes of those around him? The answer solely depends on interpretation by each individual reader and whether they believe Joe’s deformities impact his life to that extent. The ringing of the telephone in chapter one of The Dead symbolizes something coming to light from the subconscious that needs confronting. The flashback of the ringing telephone helps Joe come to the realization that he no longer has the ability to hear. With all the appendages Joe
