Writing Assignment “ My circumstances of unrelieved responsibility and permanent distraction necessitated the short story form.” ― Raymond Carver During our classes of Modern American Literature we read different stories and novels by different authors. Some of them were boring and incomprehensible for me, but were interesting to discuss and understand them. Also there were some astonishing shor stories with deep meaning which were breathtaking for me. Firstly, “Cathedral” – a short story by Raymond Carver wasn’t fascinating for me, but after the discussion during our seminar I undestood that it would be interesting for me to explore this theme and find some more information about the author and this short story. Raymond Carver was an american poet and novelist, a lot of scientists considered him to be the master of English short prose of the second half of XX century. The asceticism was the dominant feature of his writing. It means that his style of writing was very simple and concise. A lot of researchers believe that his way of writing is similar to Chehov’s one. It fulfiled his main ‘rule’ – “brevity is the soul of wit!”A lot of Carver’s works have no plot. It is just a part of someone’s life that was “torn out”. According to “Cathedral” sentences are very short and simple but meaningful. The story is a first-person narration.
