It was incorrect for scientists to originally broadcast of the possibilities for a collision in 2028 because of the lack of data they had gathered at the time. In the CNN article “NASA: Asteroid to Miss Earth by a Wide Margin,” NASA spokesman Carl Pilcher said that the scientists used limited data. Additionally, he said that “They had only 90 days of data" after spotting the asteroid, known as 1997 XF11, in December. The magnitude of the situation was far too big for these scientists to broadcast this information to the public with the little amount of data that they had collected so far. Once this information was released to this the media and public, there was definitely worry. Although the meteor was said to miss Earth, the probability of it hitting Earth wasn’t certain. Media and public didn’t over-react at all because this could be a catastrophic event affecting millions, if not billions, of lives.
