Feffer 1 Jordy Feffer American Government Norris/O’Halloran Per 2 March 6, 2019 Unit 1 Essay In 1776, on the brink of the American Revolution, it was written in the Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal” . The phrase was inspired by the unfair treatment 1 of American colonists under British rule and was established as an American value. “All men are created equal” was said to be kept in mind as the Framers drafted the United States constitution and inspired the structure of the United States government. Although “all men are created equal” was effectively applied to white males in the first draft of the Constitution, African Americans were excluded from the protections inspired by the influential phrase. Therefore, the application of “all men are created equal” in the Constitution is overall very poor. A very important right granted to all United States citizens is the right to vote. Article 1 Section 2.1 of the Constitution states that congressmen will be chosen “by the people of several states” .
