Running Head: THE ART AND SCIENCE OF LEADERSHIP AND THEORIES MATRIX There are several theories of leadership main among which are the five namely trait theory, behavioral theory, skills theory, contingency theory, and the situational leadership theory. The focus of the traits theory is of the leadership traits. This theory stressed that some traits are leader specific. These traits are not found in the non-leaders. In this way the theory stressed that the people who were leaders were born with the right traits (Carnall & Roebuck, 2015). This theory studied the social, physical and mental characteristic that separated the leaders from the non-leaders. However, years of research brought out the truth about these theories. Later the flaws of the trait theories were identified. Some of the characters that were associated with only the leaders initially came to be found in the non-leaders too. Thus, it was discovered that it was not essential that these traits could remain only inside the leaders. Some of these traits could be found in the non-leaders and it was because of their uneven nature that these theories were found to be flawed. The trait theories remained popular between the 1930’s and 1940’s (Carnall & Roebuck, 2015). The trait theory of leadership is logically considered as the first modern leadership theory which came into popularity during the second half of the twentieth century. It was criticized in some ways but irrespective of such, it has continued to gain its popularity. Despite the varying traits being identified in this theory, it can be noted that the most common intelligence and self- confidence is still attainable. The studies show that the leadership focuses mainly on the differences which exist between the leaders and their followers with the assumptions that the people occupying the leadership positions have more leadership traits than the individuals in the subordinate positions. For instance, the leaders tend to be high in things which entail self- confidence and ability to lead. The problems associated with this trait are due to the fact that the

In essence, not all who have such traits become great leaders as perceived. Behavioral theories of leadership The behavioral theories came after the trait leadership theory. They provided a new perspective on the topic of leadership. Instead of the mental, social or physical characteristics of the leaders, the focus of these theories was on the behavior of the leaders. The focus of research had changed with time and as better research tools were available, research could penetrate deeper. Research came to associate leadership with behavior. The behavioral theory also showed
