INFS 724Mini-Case Study 06:Developing Project Managers at Global Green Books PublishingSona Ngoha)What are some of the challenges facing supervisors?The challenges being faced by the supervisors include:Many of them have had only a bit of project management mentoring from Samantha, but have to be both leaders and managers.They themselves lack the technical skills and expertise in ebook whereas they are now managing the workers in ebook.Their role requires them to interact with customers, as well as with internal account managers and customer service representatives, which they have not done in the past. They are managing employees with a diverse set of skills, backgrounds, and motivations. Itis increasingly hard for them to ask employees to take on hard challenges when they themselves do not have those skills and have not done the eBook publishing that the business is increasingly moving to.While they have been doing worker level job and have been effective. They have suddenly been elevated as supervisors. However, they do not have formal training to develop the managerial skills they require in their new roles. They struggle with knowing the status of the work, as part-time employees come in and hand a piece of a project off to another worker.Most of them have no training skills in conflict management but have to deal with managing conflicts as they arise – both technical issues as permissions are delayed and content cannot yet be incorporated, leading to scheduling changes, and interpersonal issues among staff.b)What skills do you think the supervisors need to be effective project managers? Why do they need these skills?Some of the skills supervisors at Global Green Books will need to include:1.Team Management Skills: This will enable them to lead the team with greater confidence, motivate them for greater output.2.Leadership Skills: This will enable them to lead people in their teams with confidence and create a sense of shared vision.
3.Communication Skills: This will enable them to effectively communicate with both external as well as internal customers. This can greatly help them in smooth coordination ofall the activities. Further, with communication, they can also get status updates. They can speak with authority as well as empower a team with powerful communication.4.People Management & Interpersonal Skills: This will enable them to motivate team members and extract higher levels of output from them.
