John Williamson HUSV 103 Dr. Connolly 17 Jul 18 The Case of the Special Needs Client Lydia is 58 years old lady who has a diagnosis of post op disability, grieving her divorce and loss of family, inability to obtain employment, inadequate living conditions, severe financial difficulties, difficulties in accessing adequate medical treatment, extreme anxiety and depression with frequent suicidal ideation. She is not sleeping well; experiencing nightmares, flashbacks and is losing weight. The client is special needs because of the complexity of her situation, including many life management difficulties. She provides information to the counselor about her need for immediate medical attention along with the need for a mental health evaluation. The counselor delays having her sign release consent forms until their next meeting. The counselor spoke about her current living conditions. She is seeking help with contacting the local housing authority concerning relocating into houses for people 55 and older. She appears for her second meeting with the counselor stating sleeping is an issue along with not having my family. Her living condition has improved tremendously because of the counselor action in contacting the city housing authority for her. The counselor advice for her to contact the local hospital administration about her medical condition. This was a lift to her spirit and confidence that somebody care. Release of treatment consent forms are being signed. She has an appointment with the Mental Health Clinic. Her cancer is still in re-mission however, she

Williamson 2 has difficulties standing and walking because of the need for surgery to remove the buildup of scar tissues from her previous surgery. After her Mental Health evaluation, she has an appointment with the local Social Security Administration applying for Disability Compensation. There has been no improvement in her medical condition. Her departing comments to her counselor is thank you for taking and interest in me and my well-being. She reminds the counselor that it has been sometime since she has felt that someone cared about her as a human- being. Lydia arrival for her third visit with the counselor stating that she has completed her physical examination and mental health evaluation. The counselor states that he has her medical report and mental health evaluation to discuss. She will have to undergo surgery to help her cope with the bilateral mastectomy scar tissues that have developed because of low to non- existing exercises. She is aware of this requirement and now worries about how this will be funded. She is unemployed and have very low income until her disabilities start in six to seven months. Her counselor is aware of agencies that funds these times of medical procedures and referral has been made on her behalf by the medical administrator at the local hospital. Her counselor says “people who gets help are the one that help themselves. No man or woman is an island and at sometime everyone needs a helping hand to assist them maneuvering through life.”
