Student Name: Chemistry Unit 5A Portfolio *Disclaimer: Please do not try these experiments at home. Tutorial : Watch this tutorial for a complete explanation of how to complete this portfolio. Introduction: The purpose of this lab is to observe the five types of reactions. Also, to identify the reactants, predict the products and balance the reactions. Part 1: Synthesis 1. Please watch the video linked HERE to see what happens when magnesium is burned and reacts with oxygen. 2. According to the video, what was a use of magnesium powder? 1pt as flash material 3. to set of the thermite reactiion 4. Describe in general what happens in a synthesis reaction. Provide the general formula for the formation of a binary compound as shown on Page 6 of the NC Chemistry Reference Table . 1pt synthesis reaction is when reactants combine to form a product. in A+B=AB form 5. 6. Predict the product of Mg (s) and O 2(g) . First identify the charges magnesium and oxygen usually have and then apply the criss cross method to determine the final formula. 1pt 2 mg+o2>>MgO2 7. Balance the reaction. Be sure the number of each type of atom is the same on each side. Place coefficients in front of the reactants and products. 1ptMg + O2 >> 2 MgO 8.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
