Answer the following questions in three to five sentences each: What are the strengths and weaknesses of virtue ethics in relation to business ethics? How would Friedman respond? How would Freeman? How would an Aristotelian virtue ethicist analyze the Oracle vs. Peoplesoft case study?Strengths and Weaknesses of virtue ethics in relation to business ethics: Weaknesses of Virtue Ethics is that it does not provide a sense of what should beright or wrong. It does not provide any guiding principles whereas utilitarianism and stakeholder theory would. However its strengths is that it by focusing on the character traits and following within reason governed helps us understand moral choices. Oracle tried to merge their company with their competitor Peoplesoft to try to reduce competition. However Peoplesoft refused Oracle’s offer twice because Oracle’s offer price of their shares was undervalued. They would also discontinue their products and lead a big risk of antitrust authorities blocking the merger. Not only that, Oracle’s attempt in merging with Peoplesoft, thwarted its own plan of merging with another competitor, J.D. Edwards. Despite being offered twice with an even higher offer from $16 per share to $19.50, PeopleSoft disregarded the interest of their shareholders due to their own personal interests. This would be in the belief that their value of the company was worth more. PeopleSoft’s actions violated the moral principles of virtue ethics. From an Aristotelian virtue ethicist’s perspective, determining a good board of directors is evaluating the characteristics of them. By doing so, the characteristics of these board of directors need to be of high quality meaning their role should have been directed from their shareholders. From Aristotle’s view on virtues, PeopleSoft needed to have a balance of moral and intellectual virtues, feeling the right amount of emotion andpractical decision making. They acted upon the sole emotion of fear in the belief that their company was going to be taken over. Virtue Ethics:-Virtue theories of ethics supply neither a list of rules for conduct nor a procedure for picking the morally best course of action in a given situation-Issue moral judgements such as “honesty is a virtue”-
