Experiment 15: The Diels-Alder Reaction: 9,10-Dihydroanthracene-9,10? ,? -succinic Acid 0, Anhydride Objective: To perform a Diels-Alder reaction through a 1,4 addition by an activated alkene dienophile. Experimental Procedure: The procedure was followed as described in Mayo, pages 269-273, with the modifications listed in the Canvas Document. Additional modifications to the procedure included the following: This experiment marks the first use of a drying tube in organic chemistry lab. A drying tube is used to protect moisture-sensitive reaction components from atmospheric water vapor while allowing the system to remain unsealed. The TAs will review proper setup of the drying tube. Substitute anhydrous calcium sulfate for calcium chloride in the drying tube. Heat the reaction mixture at reflux for 30 minutes by immersing in a sand bath at 180-185 . Reaction Scheme: Data and Results: Anthracene Maleic Anhydride Xylenes 9,10-dihydroanthracene-9,10-,- succinic acid anhydride Mol. Formula C 14 H 10 C 4 H 2 0 3 C 18 H 12 O 3

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
