ORGANIZATIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE NURSE LEADER 2 One of the key components in an organization are leaders. In the healthcare field, and more specifically in the nursing field, these leaders are known as Nurse Managers. The Nurse Manager is who helps aspire the nurses under their guidance, to be the best version of themselves and to instill those leadership qualities in them as well. For a leader to achieve this and be effective in their role they must possess “interpersonal skills to influence others to accomplish a specific goal” (Sullivan, 2017). I will be discussing and analyzing the nurse leader and manager in my organization on my unit and the characteristics she exhibites that I find to be the most effective as well as attributes that are ineffective. Nurse Manager The nurse leader I shadowed was the Director of the Medical-Surgical unit, Deborah Akers RN, BSN. Her nursing experience is solely with medical-surgical nursing. She has been a nurse for fifteen years. She transitioned into the nurse manager role for 3 years and was promoted into the role of Director in October 2017. It was during this time that she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her roles include staffing, maintaining productivity, auditing, daily patient leadership rounding, nurse compliance, and ensuring our unit is living up to the organizations’ mission statement “above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life” (Hospital Corporation of America, Inc. 2019). A typical day in her role includes going to the two units she is the director of and getting feedback from the staff during a shift change huddle of how the previous shift went and then what to expect during day shift. She gathers all this information and then takes it to the bed meeting. The bed meeting is where all the directors and/or managers meet to discuss any staffing issues as well as, what discharges and admissions may be occurring throughout the day. This

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
