Soil Mechanics 2019 FINAL EXPERIMENT TITLE: “A study on the soil of properties of Rio De Oro, Gen Trias, Cavite” Objectives: 1. To learn about the soil property in Rio De Oro, Gen Trias, Cavite 2. To analyze the determined properties of soil 3. To produce a scientific data that can be used by the market as basis Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs): The students shall be able to: Gather information whether the soil is appropriate for building structures know if the soil composition is strong enough for the land owners to build high-rise buildings like apartments, or is only strong enough to build low-rise homes like bungalows Know the reaction of soil when it absorbs water, for example; downpour of rains, storms, or floods. Discussion: Abstract Rio de Oro, located in General Trias, Cavite, is a newly opened subdivision. This subdivision sells portions of land to the public that they may use to their own volition. Aside from the land partitions, deals, and promos, there was not a given information regarding the soil strength of these lands. As one of the researchers’ family recently bought a portion of land for them to construct their own home, the said researchers then decided that this will be a great opportunity to learn, and establish an outcome from a scientific research; both to the benefit of the study, and to the benefit of the other investors that purchase land ownership. The soil used for this experiment was obtained from Rio De Oro, Gen Trias, Cavite where a 1m hole deep was dug before retrieving the actual soil sample. The soil was then dried and sieved at required sieve number in each tests/experiments. Technological Institute of the Philippines 1 | P a g e

Soil Mechanics 2019 Chapter One Introduction Background of the Study As soils develop under a variety of conditions, the soil varies from location to location. A soil’s properties are largely determined by its parent material and weathering during its formation. Plant growth is influenced by the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil. Although discussed separately, soil properties are interdependent. Understanding soil properties is essential for nutrient planning and land-use decisions. To understand soil, researchers look at and measure the soil properties . In both cities and the countryside, selection of sites with the best soil is an important engineering decision in the building process. Whether you live in a house, condo, or apartment, your home is connected to the soil. Your school, the building where you work, the stores you shop in—all of them are built on soil, and often with it. Building foundations need to be on stable and strong soils. Soils range in strength. Some soils are able to support a skyscraper, while other soils are not able to support the weight of a human. If the soil under a building is not stable, the foundation of the building could crack, sink, or worse–the building could fall!

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
