THE EVOLUTION OF 3D PRINTING TRANSFORMS LIVES AND BUSINESSES OF TODAY 2 ABSTRACT 3D printing encompasses a variety of different printing processes. The processes are all primarily additive in nature, as materials are deposited only where needed, and thus results in significantly less materials wastage than traditional manufacturing techniques. Each of the technologies is suitable for use with a different range of materials, which in turn defines the suitable applications of the printer. This technology will change and/or disrupt how traditional life and business is operated; because consumers are making their purchase decisions based on how quickly they will receive the product. In order to stay competitive in the marketplace, companies are turning to 3D printing to create and deliver their products quicker, and 3D printing is innovating with that model and putting consumers in the driver’s seat.

THE EVOLUTION OF 3D PRINTING TRANSFORMS LIVES AND BUSINESSES OF TODAY 3 Have you ever wondered what 3D printing was and when it began? Additive manufacturing is a technology based on creating materials and objects from a digital model using additive process of layering. Also referred to as 3D Printing, a technology in which h three dimensional objects are created through additive processes, in an additive process an object is created by laying down successive layers of materials until the object is created. 3D Printing is the opposite of subtractive manufacturing of which hollows out pieces of metal or plastic that enables the production of complex shapes using less material than traditional manufacturing methods. 3D Printing is thought to be new but has been around for three decades, reinventing opportunities and is projected to transform sectors of life in business, personal and the global economy. Prior to objects being created, 3D Printing starts with files in a computer, the digital design is a CAD (computer aided design) files. A 3D model is either created from the ground up or with a 3D modeling software or from data generated from a 3D Scanner. (What is 3D Printing, n.d.) 3D modeling software has been made to suit the functions of a user’s industry. The demand has resulted in the rise of software suited to specific niches, of which provides software applications in the market that caters to various industries like aerospace or transportation, furniture design o fabric and fashion. Having a 3D Scanner allows for creating digital copy’s of an object. (How Does 3D Printing Work, n.d.) What determines the price of a 3D Printer may be surprising. For starters, parts- when a manufacturer uses high quality parts (motors, frames or electronics) this affects the price of the end product. Just because parts are of high quality, it does not mean prints will be great.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
