Assignment topic. Support workers play an essential role in healthcare by providing many aspects of direct patient care and supporting the work of registered nurses. However, as the scope of support worker practice widens, there is an increasing concern about their lack of regulation and the risks that they may present to public safety. 1) Critically evaluate and give rationale on the development of 21 st Century support workers roles in NHS nursing health care. Why has the job evolved? Consider using job description on specified role & employment law; talk to HSW about what they actually do. Include rationale on competency. Illustrate examples from practice and use supporting references (include research on the HSW role). 2) Using NMC (2008) critically analyse the legal obligations of nursing staff in delegating roles to nursing support workers. Accountability, the law and the nurse. Illustrate an example from practice where a RN is held accountable for HSW practice. 3) Critically consider the values and principles of nursing and patients rights in The NHS Constitution (2010). Use Human Rights Legislation; what rights do patients have in whether a HSW cares for them? Illustrate examples from practice and use supporting references. 4) Critically examine the risks to public safety under the non-regulation of support workers. Critique why changes in policy are recommended. Use the example from practice that you highlighted in part 1). Examine the issue of competency i.e. training and assessment for the skill and the issue of delegation (NMC, 2008). Risk management = regulation of HSW (regulation of HSW being needed to reduce the risks to public safety and regulation of HSW not reducing the risks to public safety). CRB. Is regulation required according to: DH, NHS, NMC, RCN, RN & HSW. 5) What are the ramifications for the future of nursing, the NHS and patient care? What are the positives and negatives for regulation of HSW for nursing? What are the positives and negatives for regulation of HSW for NHS? What are the positives and negatives for regulation of HSW for patients/ service users?

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
