Running Head: The Role of Total Rewards in Motivating Staff Performance The Role of Total Rewards in Motivating Staff Performance Employee rewards always have been viewed as a incentive that attracts, keep, and motivate employees. Individuals searching for employment often scan the company’s benefits section to see what incentives they have to offer to their employees. Employees want more than anything in this day and time is for their voice to be heard by their employer. When this does not happen, employees become unhappy and they will leave the company and become employed with the competitor down the street. Benefits and other work perks are so important that nearly 80% of all U.S. employees, and 90% of Millennial employees, prefer new or additional benefits over a pay increase.1 But it’s not enough to blindly offer more benefits and perks; employers must use data received from employees to intentionally design a program that meets their needs (Sizemore, 2018).Total rewardsare defined differently by many people. Compensation and benefits like retirement, health insurance and employee assistance programs (EAPs) typically come to mind when most folks think of total rewards (Sizemore,2018). However, total rewards can be everything that a company have to offer its employees from health coverage to, on-the-job training, to PTO (paid time off) and a host of other things that could all be considered as well. While many of the benefits and perks in a total rewards package result in costs to the employer, that does not necessarily make them compensation in the eyes of the employee (Sizemore, 2018).So, developing a strong and beneficial employee “Total Rewards” program helps the employer attract “top notch” talent but also helps with retaining those employees. The program also would help employees feel good about the decision that they have made to join such great company who respects, value and honor their employees work performance. Many organizations try to model their programs to reflect what others are doing (Sizemore, 2018). That’s another 2

In this competitive market of workforce managed every company wants to hire the most “qualified candidate” who will be there long term. Webster’s dictionary defines motivation as “a motivating force, stimulus, or influence: INCENTIVE, DRIVE (Webster, 2019).” According to the article, A formative evaluation of a staff reward and recognition programme, authors Saleemah and Schlechter states “motivation refers to the factors which influence human behavior and is usually comprised of three main elements:
