Abby Trethaway P1 T/Th 24 October 2017 Crucible Act One Summary In 1692, in Salem, Massachusetts the main focuses of the Puritans townspeople's lives were church, and work. Religious officials were the leaders of the town, and people were expected to follow them. There were many disputes among friends, and neighbors because of the unclear barriers between each other's land, and it is said that the community is in constant conflict with the Native American people as well. Among the disputes lies Betty Parris, in her father’s attic, whom has fallen into a mysterious coma after being caught with her cousins, Abigail, engaged in a ritual within the forest. Many of the villagers have quickly speculated the practice of witchcraft and are quick to blame Reverend Parris’s slave, Tituba. Abigail and Tituba both quickly shoot down these accusations saying they were simply dancing in the woods, having fun. Afterwards, the wealthy and influential Thomas Putnam and his wife, Ann arrive.
