Birds – Class Aves Or Reptilia?? Feathers – derived characteristics - Many characteristics have to do with flight (wings, feathers, high metabolism, light-weight body) Extant birds – wings – humerus, radius, ulna - fused finger bones ( no claws) - alula - sternum – keel (carina) - furculum – clavicles - short tail, caudal vertebrate fused pygostyle – supports feathers - skeleton – light – air sacs into long bones Birds, Flight & Feathers - characteristics of birds. .. (dinos???) 1. Feathers – insulation endothermy Ectotherms – derive most of energy directly from external source (sun); temperature is more variable Endoderms – heat is metabolic; maintain a constant body temperature over a wide range of ambient temperatures. Birds and mammals - high metabolism - insulation conserves heat - birds regulate heat by - gular fluttering (gets rid of heat) - elevating feathers (conserves heat) 2. Flight Feathers – overlap large surface area - some flightless birds – ostriches & emus, penguins
