Lab Report #1. The Scientific Method Directions: Go to Click “Begin.” You will then use the tutorial section as well as the instructional materials in the first module to answer the Pre-lab questions below. To follow, you will complete the lab by selecting the “Cricket Experiment.” Pre-Lab Questions: 1. What is the scientific method? What are the steps of the scientific method? The scientific method is a way to ask and answer scientific questions by making observations and doing experiments. Steps of Scientific Method: Collect Information Formulate a Hypothesis Test the Hypothesis Analyze Data Draw a conclusion 2. What are three important steps in order to define a problem scientifically? 1.State the problem in clear, concise language. 2.State the problem in the form of a question. 3.Confine the problem to a single major idea. 3. What is a hypothesis? A prediction that can be tested 4. What is a variable? Something in an experiment that you change. 5. What is the difference between dependent and independent variables? A factor that can be changed is called an independent variable, which consists of a treatment that is applied to the experimental subject. The effects of this treatment, called dependent variables, are observed and recorded by the researcher.
