Social Differentiation and Social Inequality Social Differentiation -- the classification of individuals into socially recognizable groups. These such classifications may be natural OR man-made. Social Inequality and Social stratification -- a system of ranking individuals based on/in terms of their access to, and possession of the things valued by THEIR society. Ex: money, property, edu, good job, Stratification Systems 1. The Caste System a. The Hindu Caste System i. God created all of us unequal b. Brahmans (from mouth) founding father, prime minister-- powerful position c. Kshatriyas (from arms) d. Vaisyas (from thighs) e. Shrudas (from feet) f. Harijans (outcastes) - bottom, very poor, untouchable Red cross - dead bodies of people Student in class from india, conservative indian fam believed in - they were not from the caste system so they had separate dinners. They converted to Christianity/Islam. Once indians converted they were untouchable christians. They had jobs traditionally dirty - toilet (search indian matrimonial) pakistan has their own caste system 2. The Estate System - you money, job, whatever doesn't give you an elevation of status. If you're low in this life you're a brahman in next. a. nobility -After fall of roman empire, they handed over power to nobles, they weren’t emperors but they had the power of them. If someone wanted to get married they had to get permission from nobles. landlord b. Clergy - looked the other way when the girl had to spend time with noble. Bc of money from the noble. Gave approval (like burning of witches in europe) priests c. Peasants - they had no rights given aside from nobles. For 1 nobility, they had ritual: She was forced to spend 1 night with noble. farmer 3. The social Class system (wealth, edu, occupation..) 4. The Dimensions of Social Stratification in the US a. Status - (not always dependent on $, sometimes independent) i. Personal prestige - there are individuals, they are good, extraordinary qualities, ex: MLK-personal charisma
ii. Association - informal(friends)/formal(structured-fraternity, sorority). They are representative of ur status. They have rules of inclusion and exclusion. Like recruitment, as you go up like medical association become you have to be a good doctor with a good standing. Informal also has rules of inclusion and exclusion - birthday party same eco socio class, yahoo has chat rooms-teentalk they could talk, adults engaged for experiment, teens got angry when revealed, they called him a pervert. They are powerless but they have the rules of inclusion and exclusion, they punished if violated. If there’s a club of millionaires, you cannot enter. Bohemian club has activities with no media coverage, with security, v little have found. Decision to drop nuclear bomb in japan, iraq war decided in BC, political decisions in CLUB. Only powerful rich white men are members-obama was invited. Because its private no one can force them to have women - courts
