Meaning of 4 symbols: The Raven The Map Mask gave by The Raven Matches The Raven is synonymous with the ideas of bad luck, misfortune, and usually death which in turn makes sense in this retelling as death is constantly surrounding Chanie. It is slowly but surely throughout the film, closing in Chanie, as the cold did in real life, just each biding its time until the inevitable occurs with Chanie. Also acts like a messenger when he delivers to Chanie a chance to return to the residential school or stay on the course that shall eventually lead to his demise via the mask he presents to Chanie. The Map in this film acts as Chanie’s main source of info as once he and others escape the residential school, Chanie is on a mission to locate and return to his family. He continually refers back to it in his journey but we learn that he is not even able to really understand the map. So this map is really just a tool to motivate Chanie but in the end, just false hope as since Chanie isn’t able to read it, he can’t really tell where he is going which ends up in him just chucking away the map to a fire in frustration. (most likely) This mask given to Chanie by this Raven prominent throughout the film is a sort of binding contract that Chanie can take or leave. As told, Chanie is beginning to feel despair and as this is said, the raven arrives holding a mask Chanie made in the residential school. This basically offers Chanie an opportunity to escape the path he is going down, which shall eventually lead to his demise, and go back to the residential school, suffering but alive. Or, remain steadfast in his path, and meet death. The meaning of the mask is really echoed by the lyrics/visuals as it helps to illustrate these ideas I have said. Also, through some other interpretations I’ve seen, it is also said that the mask is the thing that Chanie ends up accepting. To explain, it is said that Chanie, by accepting this mask and continuing on his journey, could become a martyr. Through passing away but eventually becoming someone who the The matches which Chanie receives from the lady in the film are a sort of safety net/body armour for himself. Going more in depth, Chanie all throughout the story, once he receives them, keeps the matches close and safe, as shown by the holding of them in a jar with a screw top lid which is pretty seal proof (at least I think so). This is done as these matches help to keep Chanie going by warming him whenever it is too cold to bear and is responsible probably for helping him get as far as he could. But, once he runs out, he is completely open to the cold, with no help from the matches to give him some sort of comfort. This open susceptibility ticks away at Chanie’s life, until it eventually overtakes him.
