Cultural Competence Toolkit Jawonda Clark ECE 405: Children and Families in a Diverse Society Professor Crystal Mealor March 11, 2019
Introduction Diversity is a huge part of our lives. As an educator, it is essential to teach children about Cultural Competence. “Cultural competence is the ability to successfully teach students who come from a culture or cultures other than our own,” (NEA, n.d). I believe that teaching children about different cultures will help the view other cultures in a different way. In this presentation, I will discuss the five basic cultural competence skills: valuing diversity, being culturally self- aware, the dynamics of difference, knowledge of students’ culture, and institutionalizing cultural knowledge and adapting to diversity. I will perform assessments to see how the children are performing physically, emotionally, cognitively, and academically. After each assessment, I would provide the results to the families and discuss with them how to help them develop successfully. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA-NC

Parents play a crucial role in their child’s learning and development. “Parents involvement in early childhood education can extend the experiences that a child has inside the classroom to actual activities that happen in the home,” (Education, 2017).
