IntroductionDiversity is a huge part of our lives. As an educator, it is essential to teach children about Cultural Competence. “Cultural competence is the ability to successfully teach students who come from a culture or cultures other than our own,” (NEA, n.d). I believe that teaching children about different cultures will help the view other cultures in a different way. In this presentation, I will discuss the five basic cultural competence skills: valuing diversity, being culturally self-aware, the dynamics of difference, knowledge of students’ culture, and institutionalizing cultural knowledge and adapting to diversity. These skills are important because they help promote an environment that encourages family interaction and understanding cultural differences in a classroom.
Valuing DiversityExplain how you create accepting and respectful environments for different cultural backgrounds and customs, different ways of communicating, and different traditions and values.As an educator, I would make sure that my classroom is filled with objects and pictures that represent all cultural backgrounds. I will provide several ways of communication via email, text, phone, newsletter, and face-to-face interactions. I will make sure that each of these communication options are customized for each of the families languages.I will make sure that the families feel comfortable when they enter the classrooms.Describe one diversity activity that you would implement in an environment that families can be a part of. You can use your Week 4 Assignments and Discussions to help with this.In order to support the children in my classroom, I would assess them on a weekly basis. I will perform assessments to see how the children are performing physically, emotionally, cognitively, and academically.
