Viet Tran Chinese 3360 Midterm Essay Books are not the only way to spread and convey history across to different people. Movies are another way to spread history through moving pictures and acting. Even though it’s not all accurate, the feeling of watching a movie and moving pictures helps the audience retain the history and interest. This also helps the audience experience how it was like back then, through this it gives the audience a better understanding, and they can relate to some extent. Therefore any type of film, for example Chinese films can be useful for conveying awareness of recent shifts in Chinese Society. In this essay, Chinese films such as To Live, Tiananmen, Sunflower, Ermo, Thomas Mao, and a writing piece called Cops and Aliens will help show that movies can convey different ideological specially China. The film “ To Live” story starts in the 1940’s with Fugui who is a compulsive gambler and his family. Due to his gambling habits and ignoring his wife complaints, he lost it all to Longer making him lose his family’s home. Through this experiences hardship of making money through performing with puppets with Chunsheg leaving this wife and kids behind. Fugui and Chunsheg get captured and force to join the Chinese war, this benefited them because working with the army gave benefits. Fugui starts over with his family and having blind faith in communism for his family to keep their benefits, however suffers tragedies along the way such as his children dying and Cultural Revolution. In the end he is happy spending time with the family he’s got and his grandson. Patriotism was express highly in this movie especially in the scene where the daughter marries the leader of the Red Guards. The town’s folk painted the leaders face

Viet Tran Chinese 3360 on the wall near their home to express their love for their leader and how much he has given them. They did like the leader Mao is blessing their marriage and even a portrait of Mao was given to the Fugui family as a gift by Chunsheg for their marriage. His face was everywhere. This shows how much the town’s folk appreciate what leader Mao did, in other words, “blind faith” as Fugui says it. However in the end Fugui shifts from patriotism to his own ideology and looks toward the future.
