Unformatted text preview: Eating Disorders: Study Questions Synopsis : This lecture begins w/ an overview ō three major eating disorders: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge-eating Disorder. A fourth eating disorder, Pica, is much less prevalent & will be touched on briefly. The etiology & incidence ō eating disorders in aggregate are addressed first. Then, each condition will be examined specifically. For each disorder we will cover: DSM-IV diagnosis, history, age ō onset, course ō the disorder, familial pattern, associated features, complications, & treatment. Textbook readings: Chapter 12 I. Overview a. Anorexia Nervosa (underweight) b. Bulimia Nervosa (normal weight w/ fluctuations) c. Binge-eating Disorder (overweight) d. Pica [overlap ō eating disorders ] What are the three main eating disorders we discussed? 3 Main Eating Disorders : 1) anorexia nervosa : undereating → underweight 2) binge-eating disorder : chronic overeating → overweight 3) bulimia nervosa : “compensatory behavior”; binging & starving/purging ( e.g. vomiting, laxative use, excessive exercise) → normal weight w/ fluctuations compensatory : compensates for kcal (weight gain), not ill effects- extremes : starving vs. binging- normal eating (eating to hunger, stopping w/ satiety) → normal weight- normal – disordered eating (not eating according to hunger/satiety) – eating disorder (frequent & severe disordered eating; degree & severity) II. Etiology a. Psychological disorders b. Demographics Etiology : study ō causes Are eating disorders primarily a psychological or a nutritional problem? Eating disorders are primarily a psychological /emotional, not nutritional, problem, although they have nutritional/medical consequences. What are some characteristics ō the population most at risk for eating disorders? Unique Demographics : characteristics ō pop. most at risk for eating disorders- 95% female (growing & underreported among men)- 90% middle- & upper-class white- nearly 100% wealthier, industrialized nations ( e.g. USA, Canada, Western Europe)- 80% highly-educated households Incidence :- 1 in 100-150 females have an eating disorder- 20% ō college women (for all eating disorders)- age ō onset : early adolescence up to late 20s III.
