Hector Berlioz –  Symphonie Fantastique The following outline should help guide you through this truly “fantastic” symphony.   Each movement has a story or “program” given by the composer and each movement has recognizable musical traits.  [Listen to the piece on MyMusicLab (4 th  movement) or on  Variations: Kamien CD5, or the full recording, or on the website listed below. There are  also many youtube recordings of this symphony.] Innovations:  Use of the same melodic motif (id é e fixe) in every movement creates  thematic unity     Autobiographical fantasy about the composer’s fixation on Harriet  Smithson (whom fell in love with after seeing her onstage as Ophelia; they later married). This website will be very helpful as you go through the piece:  Listen for Clues: Romantic Musical Elements found throughout: Sound:  What kind of dynamics?  Polyphonic What about timbre (tone color)? How many instruments do you hear?  The  tone color is very triumphant.  I hear a drum, horns, clarinet along with one other one I  can’t distinguish. How large is the orchestra?  90 instruments Harmony:  Is the harmony consonant? Dissonant?  Dissonant Melody:  Where do you fine the  id é e fixe?
