Syllabus Chemistry 109B Winter 2019 UCSB MWF, 2:00-2:50 pm, CHEM 1179 Instructor : Robert Lewis e-mail: [email protected] Office: PSBN 2660 Office Hours: MWF 3:00 – 3:50 pm Prerequisites: Chem 109A or 109AH with a minimum grade of C-. GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES The purpose of this course is to familiarize yourself with the language of organic chemists so that you can: Name and classify basic organic compounds Connect structure details of a compound with its reactivity Identify important elements in chemical reactions in order to predict the likely outcome Communicate your knowledge effectively with other chemists by using correct terminology A general understanding of chemistry, especially organic chemistry, has broader impacts on your daily life as well. It gives you a better understanding of the world around you, of activities you do every day. Cooking, managing your health, admiring the changing color of leaves, washing your hands with soap, and simply breathing are all examples of chemical reactions and interactions that you can better understand with chemistry. Studying science of any sort instills the ability to think critically about information you receive and empowers you to make important choices. REQUIRED TEXT AND MATERIALS 1. Organic Chemistry , 8 th edition by P. Y. Bruice 2. iClicker 2, available at the bookstore. 3. Recommended: Solutions Manual and Study Guide , 8 th edition by P. Y. Bruice ADDITIONAL HELP 1. Please don’t hesitate to come see me in my office hours, I am here to help you learn. 2. Send me an email requests for appointment if you can’t make it to regular office hours. 3. Campus Learning Assistant Services (CLAS). I highly recommend participation in CLAS. They offer help in specific classes as well as general help in learning how to study more effectively.
