Comedy is the counterpart to tragedy. The Greeks started making a fourth comedic play after thetypical three tragedies “to send the audience home in a happier state of mine (Janaro 2012).” After a while, people only wanted to come to the theater to see comedies. This helped them to make light of serious situation or to see how small mistakes had silly consequences. There are four main types of comedy; satire, comedy of character, farces, and parody. Satire focuses on making fun, or making light, of the problems and vices of society. This is typically done as an attempt to correct problems by way of irony, ridicule, or exaggeration. Injustices and political problems are usually the victims of satirical theater. One example of satire in comedy would be Saturday Night Live. They make fun of things like Republican debates, The Oscar Awards, and political elections. Comedy of character differs from satire in that the focus is on the main character’s personal traits and qualities in addition to the plot of the story. Greek theater had not yet learned of psychology
