2 CSAC 1020 Fall 2018-Winter 2018 Course Description Why are professional competencies, such as oral and written business communication, interpersonal and collaborative problem-solving skills so important for accounting professionals? We live in an increasingly competitive, diverse and digital world, with more options for communication and collaboration than ever before but sometimes our ability to communicate and connect is ineffective. This course examines how to strengthen written and oral business communication, improve working relationships and collaborative problem-solving skills. We will explore the following topics: The link between professional competencies and career success Planning, organizing, drafting and revising business communications efficiently and effectively Business communications in the digital age, including short digital messages and longer written messages Preparing and delivering effective business presentations Professional etiquette, running effective meetings, teamwork and relationship building Diversity and intercultural communication Messages tailored to the audience, using direct and indirect, positive, negative and persuasive message strategies Handling complaints or communicating negative information Peer feedback and assessment What’s in it for you? 3 CSAC 1020 Fall 2018-Winter 2018 LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, you will gain the knowledge, skills and attitudes to: 1. Describe and analyze the importance of professional competencies, such as oral and written communication and presentation skills, as well as interpersonal and team building skills, for long-term career success. 2. Discover, demonstrate and evaluate teamwork, collaboration and professional etiquette skills, including verbal and non-verbal communication skills, as well as collaborative problem-solving skills, to support enhanced working relationships and optimal team performance.
