MARK EDMUNDSON p. 403 "Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here? A Word to
the Incoming Class"
Mark Edmundson, an award-winning professor of English at the University of
Virginia,
wrote an article called “Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here? A Word
to the Incoming Class.” In the article Edmundson believes that obtaining an education in
America today is based on the notion that going to college is only meant for finding a
good job and society promotes this belief vice the notion that college should be meant to
be an additional avenue of life long learning. Edmundson’s purpose of this article is to
shed light on a broken system that places emphasis on things like education to gain more
monetary value, employment stature, and the majority of undergrads predetermined
future with them having little to no say in how to approach the college life because of
family influence.
