CONCEPT: BALANCING CHEMICAL REACTIONS When balancing an equation always make sure the ________ and ________ of atoms on both sides of the arrow are equal. EXAMPLE : Write balanced equations for each of the following by inserting the correct coefficients in the blanks: a. ____ Al (s) + ____ Cl 2 (g) ____ AlCl 3 (s) b. ____ Ba 3 (PO 4 ) 2 (s) + ____ KOH (aq) ____ K 3 PO 4 (aq) + ____ Ba(OH) 2 (aq) c. ____ C 4 H 10 (aq) + ____ O 2 (g) ____ CO 2 (g) + ____ H 2 O (l) CHEMISTRY - KOTZ 9E CH.3 - CHEMICAL REACTIONS Page 2

CONCEPT: AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS The ___________________________ of a compound represents the maximum amount of solute that dissolves in a solvent. SOLUBILITY RULES SOLUBLE IONIC COMPOUNDS INSOLUBLE IONIC COMPOUNDS 1. Group 1A ions (Li + , Na + , K + , etc.) and ammonium ion (NH 4 + ) are soluble. 1. (Hydroxides) OH - and (Sulfides) S 2- , are insoluble except when with Group 1A ions (Li + , Na + , K + , etc.), ammonium ion (NH 4 + ) and Ca 2+ , Sr 2+ , Ba 2+ . 2. (Nitrates) NO 3 - , (acetates) CH 3 COO - or C 2 H 3 O 2 - , and most perchlorates (ClO 4 - ) are soluble. 2. (Carbonates) CO 3 2- and (Phosphates) PO 4 3- are insoluble except when with Group 1A ions (Li + , Na + , K + , etc.), ammonium ion (NH 4 + ). 3. Cl - , Br - , and I - are soluble, except when paired with Ag + , Pb 2+ , Cu + and Hg 2 2+ . 4. (Sulfates) SO 4 2- are soluble, except those of Ca 2+ , Sr 2+ , Ba 2+ , Ag + , and Pb 2+ . When we classify a compound as soluble it means that the compound is _______________________ , it is also known as a(n) _______________________ because it conducts electricity. NaNO 3 (s) H 2 O Na + (aq) + NO 3 (aq) When we classify a compound as insoluble it means that the compound is a _______________________ , it is also known as a(n) _______________________ because it doesn’t conduct electricity. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
