5B Functions and Graphs Given a function described by an equation, find function values (outputs) for specified values (inputs). 2 The inputs are values of x substituted into the equation and are called members of the domain. The outputs are the resulting values of y and are called members of the range . If we call the function f, we can use x to represent an arbitrary input and f ( x ) —read “ f of x ,” or “ f at x ,” or “the value of f at x ”— to represent the corresponding output.
