Adam Kuhl Reflections The Visitors I base most of my knowledge of being a man off of what I’ve learned from my father. I can’t imagine what life would be like for me if I didn’t have a father, but rather uncles. I guess the role of the father would be taken by the uncles, but I don’t think that it would be the same as the one that my father plays. This isn’t me saying that I believe that the system that is being practiced is wrong, but I don’t think that I would rather be a part of that one than the one I’m part of. Another concept that I had difficulty accepting of this very loose tribe was its morals. I know that it’s because of the society that I’m a part of and was brought up in, but to me, sex means something. As a man, I don’t know if I would be able to completely dissociate myself from the sexual meetings and have them mean nothing in a social setting. I also think that that this system would make things awkward when you see these women around. I think I would like being approached by women asking for a

Unformatted text preview: visit, as I would take this as a compliment and a boost to my ego. Not having any shame or jealousy would make for an interesting social setting. So much of my culture is based on both the sexual taboo and jealousy that I cant imagine what it would be like. I guess that not having to worry about what people say about you is a positive aspect of this culture, but from what I read, they are messing up their existence in a very real way. Because of the incest and lack of safety during these visits, STDs are rampant among the villagers. I completely believe that more than half of the villagers have syphilis because of the number of sexual partners that they have. This is also causing women to become sterile and babies to be born with deformities. Its sad that the people were oppressed over their beliefs, but its sadder that babies, because of no fault of their own, have to deal with the deformities that this society has bred....
