Themes from A Grain of Wheat Betrayal Family Religion Uhuru and Disillusionment Violence and Oppression ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` Betrayal: -For me, betrayal was a big theme in the book, what are some examples? -Mugo betraying Kahika -Mumbi betraying Gikonyo -Karanja betraying his people -Betrayal of man against man (especially when the man in charge of loans buys out land from Gikonyo) 1. How does Mumbi and Gikonyo’s marriage parallel the independence movement of Kenya? -There was a lot of turmoil during Mumbi and Gikonyo’s marriage and then along with the child, that made things worse at first because Gikonyo wouldn’t even recognize the child. But in the end, Gikonyo felt pressure from his mother to support Mumbi and the child, and he wanted to make an effort and reconcile. This parallels the independence movement because there was chaos during the movement for freedom. Violence of all kinds, and people being killed everyday including at least one hanging everyday for 4
