The Hebrews (or the Jews) and the Phoenicians shared a similar government or political structure but differed in economic structure. Both societies were at some point subject to rule by other powerful kings, pharaohs, or neighboring dynas-ties. They appeared to assimilate into whichever culture held power at the time. They were at many times subjects of another king’s rule. Again, the conquerors forced many residents into exile. Unlike their cousins to the north, however, most of these Israelites maintained their re-ligious identity, and many of the deportees eventually returned to Judea, where they became known as Jews (Bentley, Ziegler, and Streets-Salter 2015, 41).
