Description of Course Content: An introduction to small jazz ensemble performance practices and
techniques, including improvisation. Students will study and perform easy standard selections of the
small jazz ensemble repertoire. This class will be divided into multiple small jazz ensembles. Public
performance required. Class format includes daily evaluation and performance of assigned material.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon satisfactory completion of this course, the student will be able
to:
• Demonstrate a basic knowledge of standard forms, procedures and responsibilities while
performing at a beginning level a small set of easy standard selections of the small jazz
ensemble repertoire.
• Employ fundamental improvisational techniques while performing easy standard selections
of the small jazz ensemble repertoire.
