The dysfunction can occur at any time during a normal human sexual activity. This can be during arousal where one may fail to be aroused by the other partner; one may also lose desire in the partner or may even completely change the preference of the partners. Studies have shown that sexual dysfunction develops mostly as one gets older. However, some emotional factors like stress and anxiety have also been proved to be a contributing factor to the development of sexual dysfunction. The problem is equally common among all sexes. Insights into the nature and being of human sexuality have been fundamental in addressing the issues surrounding sexual dysfunction. Over the recent years, more and more data have been availed with attempts to provide a therapeutic explanation to the various problems related to human sexuality. As such, the condition was considered much as psychological with implications that could persist for as long the individual remained in the same psychological state. Models were hence advanced to control such a condition. These would involve a series of psychoanalysis and counselling sessions. Sexual functioning has been identified as an immediate cause of the dysfunction. According to the book by Kaplan, sexual dysfunction can develop in an individual who would seem to be normal and active in all other aspects of life. The worries failure to perform of inability to satisfy the partner was shown to put an individual in a psychological state in which they get more concerned with what will happen after the sexual intercourse. Such an emotional disturbance was used by researchers to formulate a hypothesis for their studies in an attempt to relate the dysfunction to an immediate obstacle. Behavioural therapists argued that emotional therapy when based on the causes of the immediate psychological state of an individual prior to sex can manage the dysfunction. These individuals usually respond rapidly to the therapies. Sex therapy was advanced with the aim of providing a solution to the individuals who experience the sexual dysfunction. It usually involves the utilization of sexual and communicative tools to provide an integrated solution to the problem. The primary role of such a therapy is to improve the individual’s sexual functioning. The erotic part of the relationship between couples, which they carry out during the sexual activity forms the basis of the sex therapy.
