OverviewThis book application comes from David Livermore’sLeading with CulturalIntelligence: The Real Secret to Success. The premise of the book focuses on the importance ofdealing with intercultural communication through the development of cultural intelligence (CQintelligence). This book focuses on four specific CQ intelligence areas or capabilities that willaid in communicating in various multicultural settings. The book begins by giving the importantcharge of understanding why culture matters. It is here that Livermore defines culturalintelligence as, “Cultural intelligence is the capability to function effectively across national,ethnic, and organizational cultures.”1What method Livermore posits is the concepts of CQ drive,CQ knowledge, CQ strategy, and CQ action. Livermore presents CQ drive as the desire toengage cultures, CQ knowledge as understanding cultural differences, CQ strategy as planning inregards to cultural differences, and CQ action as a change in behavior or an action thateffectively deals with other cultures.2The book gives detailed explanations and circumstancesthat apply to each of these concepts to expound on their definitions. The book finishes by givingexamples of “results of cultural intelligence” (ROI) and its effectiveness and then gives pointerson developing a culturally intelligent team.
