Unit 5 Key Questions Lesson 17 57. a) The population can still be growing because the birth rate of 1.6 children per woman is higher than the mortality rate in Canada. Also, immigration can raise the population growth. b) Canada’s relatively low birth rate is because we are a developed country. One of the factors that likely affect Canada’s birth rate could be that women in Canada have made significant social advancement with equal opportunities as men, therefore delaying having children and reducing family size. Another factor could be that majority of the population live in urbanized cities and do not need to have as many children for labour. Living space in cities is smaller and it is more expensive to house and feed large family. c) If Canada’s population were to start declining in the next few years, it would not automatically translate into a lower ecological footprint for the average Canadian. Every individual is responsible for their daily demands on the earth’s ecosystem. For example, it is estimated that each individual needs 2.1 global hectares (gha) to meet their needs – but this is not evenly distributed. The average American needs about 9.4 gha and the average Canadian needs 7.6 gha, but a person in West Africa needs about 0.7 gha. 58. a) The argument that global warming is an example of “the tragedy of the commons” could be right because our atmosphere is a shared resource that is not controlled or owned by anyone directly. Resulting in no need for individuals to conserve or protect it. The population continues to rise while food production rises more slowly. In other words, the human populations will always exceed the growth rate of their food supply. b) There are two approaches to human population that might lead to a solution. There are voluntary approaches (i.e. example, birth control, abstinence, or delayed marriage) or involuntary (i.e. famine, disease, or war). 59. a) The goal of Grand Challenges Canada is to decrease the mortality rate of pregnant women and child birth in developing nations. Childbirth is often the leading cause of death in women of reproductive age in low-middle income countries.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
