Department of Mathematics Spring 2008 MAT017-110: Introduction to Mathematics Instructor: Dr. Perry Lee Office: Lytle Hall 229 Office Hours: MWF 11am – 12 noon; TH 9:30am – 11am. Telephone: 610-683-4401 E-mail : Course Information Class Meeting Time: T/Th 12:00pm – 1:20pm Classroom: DF 206 Course Description This course is intended to acquaint students, for example, with a detailed explanation of the mathematics used in everyday life. Topics include set theory, logic, number theory and the real number system, and probability. Textbook Mathematics All Around, 3 rd Edition, by T.L. Pirnot, Pearson Addison-Wesley. Course Objectives Success in many college-level courses begins with a good understanding of mathematics. One objective is to help students develop this understanding, while another goal is to show students how mathematics can be used as a modeling language for real-life applications. Course Policies and Guidelines: 1. Attendance Policy I strongly recommend that you attend every class. If you are going to be away for a valid reason, please let me know so that I can assign you work during your absence. You are always expected to be on time for class. 2. Withdrawal Policy Please refer to KU’s academic policy. 3. Special Support Services for Students Students are encouraged to personally discuss arrangements with the instructor if there is a need to share any information.
