Molecular Orbitals from 'd' orbitals Molecular Orbitals from 'd' orbitals In transition elements d -orbitals are involved in bonding in a similar manner to what we have seen earlier with p orbitals. -bonding: When z axis on a transition metal atom (or ion) is collinear with the z axis any other species bonding with the metal, two d z 2 orbitals can combine end-on and form a boding and the corresponding * antibonding molecular orbital.

-bonding: The d xz and d yz orbitals form -bonding as illustrated below.

- bonding : When atomic orbitals meet from two parallel planes and combine side to side, as do d x 2 y 2 and d xy orbitals with collinear axis, they form delta ( ) orbitals. The sign indicates that wave sign changes on C 4 rotation about the bond axis.

Non-bonding interactions: When the orbitals lineup in such a way that overlapping regions have opposite signs then molecular orbitals cannot be formed (see below).

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
