Heteronuclear Diatomic Molecules When two different atoms combine to form molecular orbitals the correlation diagram is similar to that of homonuclear diatomic molecules. However, the energies of the two atomic orbitals from two different atoms are not identical and we have to keep that mind before make a conclusion on the interaction between various orbitals. Let us consider a hypothetical molecule formed by two atoms X and Y, the relative energies of atomic orbitals in X and Y will determine whether efficient overlap will occur or not.

The contribution to bonding molecular orbital ( MO) by the atomic orbital on Y ( Y ) is greater than the atomic orbital on X ( X ), because the energy of atomic orbital on Y is closer to the bonding molecular orbital. Regarding the antibonding molecular orbital, the atomic orbital in X ( X ) contributes more than the atomic orbital on Y ( Y ). The pictorial representations of the above arguments is given on the right side of the figure.

Another point to remember is, when two elements from the same row in the periodic table combine to form a diatomic molecule, the one with the higher electronegativity will have atomic orbitals at a lower energy that the one with the lower electronegativity.
