Nicholaus R. Powell SNHU Lit Mrs.Kane 4 April 2018 “The Jury Of Her Peers” Social Realism Paper “The Jury Of Her Peers”, portrays a short story written by Susan Glaspell, a theme of serving a higher moral law rather than the government appointed law that a sheriff follows is expressed. The story is set in a isolated country setting during the 1940s, a time where women were none other than housewives who did what they were told. Within this isolated setting, Minnie, the main character, struggled with feeling alone and isolated from the world. Minnie’s husband was found dead, with a rope around his neck. Neighboring wives and their husbands were brought to the scene of the crime. The wives find a piece of information and struggle with whether or not they should follow a just law or a traditional law. During this time period, and especially in this setting, the standards were men were in the hierarchy, while women were meant to sit at home, tend to chores, and cook for men, unlike men “women worry over triffles.”(Glaspell).
